Focusing primarily on vocabulary acquisition and proper pronunciation, Influent is a fresh take on learning a new language through exploring a fully interactive 3D environment where absolutely everything can be selected, studied, and learned.
The game even manages to incorporate both Adjectives and Verbs by attaching them to nouns they are associated with like a Red Apple or to Read a Book. In this way, players will be able to easily recall these words by association.
Although Influent doesn’t offer grammar instruction currently, the developer, Rob Howland, has his sights set on making future installments in the form of episodic releases, should the game’s sales provide enough funding to hire the necessary help (artists, programmers, translators, etc).
Influent was originally developed as part of a research project at the Entertainment Computing Laboratory at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Research funding was provided by the Monbukagakusho (MEXT), also known as the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan. Upon completion of the research term, funding from a successful Kickstarter Campaign aided in Influent’s completion. Influent successfully passed Steam Greenlight in January 2014, following the full release on March 20, 2014 on the Steam Store and Humble Store.
